Best Ways to Store & Display a Quarter Collection

The best way to store and display Washington and Liberty quarters is to use coin storage designed specifically for 24.5 mm coins and made from archival-quality, PVC-free materials. Properly fitted coin storage prevents coins from shifting, scratching, or being exposed to moisture and air that can cause toning or oxidation. SAFE coin storage products are engineered for long-term preservation, making them a trusted choice among numismatists worldwide.

Collectors often choose SAFE coin display cases for organized viewing of date runs and series like State or National Park quarters, while SAFE coin holders and presentation cases are ideal for proof coins, silver issues, and higher-value pieces. For certified or graded quarters, SAFE slab storage boxes protect holders and keep collections secure and neatly arranged. Using SAFE coin cases, capsules, and coin albums gives collectors a professional system to protect condition, maintain value, and beautifully display a quarter collection for years to come.

History of the U.S. Quarter

The United States quarter dollar was first issued in 1796 as a silver coin. Early quarters typically featured Liberty on the obverse and an eagle on the reverse, a theme that continued in various forms through the early 20th century. One of the most admired classic designs is the Standing Liberty Quarter (1916–1930) by Hermon A. MacNeil, which depicted Liberty stepping forward with a shield and olive branch. In 1932, the Mint introduced the first Washington Quarter to honor George Washington’s 200th birthday. This portrait, designed by John Flanagan, became one of the longest-running designs in U.S. coinage. Quarters minted before 1965 were struck in 90% silver, adding strong appeal for collectors today.

Modern quarters ushered in a new era of collecting through changing reverse designs. Beginning in 1999, circulating commemorative programs transformed the quarter into a storytelling canvas for American history, geography, and culture. Series such as the State Quarters, America the Beautiful, and American Women Quarters introduced hundreds of designs and attracted millions of new collectors. The American quarter remains one of the most collected and recognizable coins in the world, appealing to both beginner and advanced numismatists.
