Gold presidential dollar coin with portrait of George Washington and inscriptions

The History of the U.S. Presidential $1 Coins

The Presidential $1 Coin Program was introduced by the U.S. Mint in 2007 to honor former U.S. presidents in the order they served. The series began with George Washington and continued with four new presidential designs released each year. Each coin features a portrait of the president on the obverse and a Statue of Liberty design on the reverse, while edge inscriptions include the year, mint mark, and the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” This edge lettering was a notable modern feature that set the series apart from earlier dollar coins.

Presidential dollars share the same golden-colored manganese-brass composition as the Sacagawea and SBA $1 coins. Although the coins were initially released for circulation, public demand for dollar coins in everyday commerce was limited. In 2011, the Treasury halted large-scale circulation production, and the series has since been struck primarily for collectors.

Special releases, including later issues honoring recently eligible presidents, continue to generate collector interest. With historical themes, distinctive designs, and a defined timeline, Presidential dollars remain a popular modern U.S. coin series.
