About SAFE® Collecting Supplies
Born from a collector's own obsession
SAFE began not as a business plan, but as a passion. Friedrich Schneider was a stamp collector first — and a dealer second. He built his first business around stamps themselves, buying and selling with the eye of someone who truly loved what he handled.
But Friedrich noticed something: the supplies collectors needed to store, display, and protect their finds simply weren't good enough. He saw the gap, and in 1953 he set out to fill it. Schwäbische Albumfabrik — SAFE — was born in the town of Bempflingen, Germany.
Today, the Schneider family still runs both branches of what Friedrich started: one son carries on the stamp-dealing tradition, and the other leads SAFE's collecting supplies business. Production remains rooted in Germany across two facilities in Bempflingen and Reutlingen, where the same standards Friedrich insisted on are upheld to this day.
"While our products are often copied, our quality has never been replicated."
A family business, from the very beginning
Axel and Kurt — two generations, one mission.
Axel was, before anything else, a collector. Born and raised in Germany, he came to the United States with his wife and an idea: the American collecting community deserved access to the finest German-made supplies, and he was the one to bring them.
There was no internet, no digital marketing — just Axel, his product, and a community of people who shared his passion. He went to shows. He went to conventions. He let the quality speak for itself, and word spread.
In time, Axel and his wife had a son: Kurt. From a young age, Kurt was part of the business — learning it, living it, breathing it. What started in a small shed behind their home grew steadily into something much larger. As Axel aged, Kurt stepped naturally into the role his father had built. What Axel passed down wasn't just a company — it was a philosophy of care, craftsmanship, and commitment to the collector.
Kurt and his wife run SAFE USA today, out of a large warehouse facility just outside Philadelphia. Their children have since joined the team — not because they had to, but because this business has a way of becoming part of you.
The people behind your collection
Every order, every question, every recommendation — it comes from people who genuinely care about collecting. This is who you're working with.

Kurt's children have joined the business with a clear mission: honor everything Axel and Kurt built, while making sure SAFE finds the next generation of passionate collectors.
From a backyard shed to a full warehouse operation
What Axel started in the early days — hand-selling to fellow collectors, hauling product to shows — has grown into a full-scale North American import and distribution operation.
Our Pennsylvania warehouse is stocked with the full breadth of SAFE's German-manufactured lineup: albums, cases, sleeves, magnifiers, testing equipment, and specialty accessories for every type of collection imaginable.
Every product we carry is scientifically tested at our headquarters in Germany to the highest archival standards — pH-neutral, 100% free of plasticizers and PVC. When it arrives at our warehouse, it arrives ready to protect your collection for decades.
