History of the Morgan & Peace Dollar
The Morgan Silver Dollar was first struck by the U.S. Mint from 1878 to 1904, and again in 1921, during a period of American westward expansion and industrial growth. Designed by Mint Engraver George T. Morgan, it features Liberty in profile on the obverse, encircled by 13 stars, “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and the year, while the reverse shows an eagle with outstretched wings clutching arrows and an olive branch. The coin quickly became a favorite among collectors and remains one of the most iconic U.S. coins.
The Peace Silver Dollar replaced the Morgan Dollar in 1921 to commemorate the end of World War I and symbolize America’s return to peace. Designed by sculptor Anthony de Francisci, the obverse features Liberty with a radiant crown, while the reverse shows an eagle at rest holding an olive branch above the inscription “PEACE.” Struck until 1935, the Peace Dollar celebrated the nation’s post-war optimism. In 2021, the Mint reissued the Peace Dollar as a collectible to mark its 100th anniversary, reaffirming its historical and numismatic significance.
