Best Ways to Store & Display a Half Dollar Collection

The best ways to store and display Kennedy and historic half dollars begin with using archival, PVC-free storage built for 30.6 mm coins. Half dollars, particularly silver issues, are prone to scratches, toning, and environmental damage, making proper storage essential for preserving both condition and value. SAFE coin storage products are trusted by collectors for long-term protection and display.

SAFE half dollar coin display cases and albums allow collectors to organize date runs, mint marks, and key designs in a clear, structured format. SAFE coin capsules protect individual coins from handling, friction, and environmental exposure. For higher-value coins or certified pieces, SAFE presentation cases and slab storage boxes provide added security and professional display. Using SAFE coin albums, coin holders, and coin cases ensures half dollar collections remain organized, protected, and visually impressive for years to come.

History of the U.S. Half Dollar

The U.S. half dollar, first minted in 1794, has long been the largest circulating coin in diameter and weight. Early designs featured Liberty on the obverse and an eagle on the reverse, with numerous design changes through the 19th and early 20th centuries. Notable designs include the Walking Liberty half dollar (1916–1947) and the Franklin half dollar (1948–1963).

In 1964, the Kennedy half dollar was introduced shortly after President John F. Kennedy’s assassination. The original 1964 coin was 90% silver, with silver content reduced to 40% from 1965 to 1970, before transitioning to copper-nickel clad composition in 1971. Half dollars remained common in circulation until the 1970s but gradually became rare in everyday transactions, largely due to reduced demand and changing public habits.

From 2001 to 2020, half dollars were minted primarily for collectors, as Federal Reserve inventories were ample. Production resumed for general circulation in 2021. Today, Kennedy and historic half dollars are highly valued by collectors, and their evolving designs, compositions, and historical significance make them a cornerstone of American numismatics.
